Alessio Lisci: “We’re not happy with how the season ended, but this has to be celebrated”

The head coach spoke to the media about the end of the season

Osasuna head coach Alessio Lisci spoke to the media after the club secured its place in La Liga for next season.

“We’re always self-critical — I don’t want anyone to think we aren’t — but today is a day to enjoy this because it’s very difficult,” Lisci said. “This season’s league has been crazy. We have to enjoy it, and then tomorrow we’ll talk.”

Asked about the mood in the dressing room, Lisci said the players were initially “in shock” after the match.

“We spoke about it, and now they’re very happy and celebrating the season because that’s what we had to do,” he said. “The objective was survival, and we stayed up. At one point after securing safety, we thought we could fight for something more, and we tried because two weeks ago we were talking about Europe. It wasn’t possible in the end. We’re not happy with how the season finished, and we’ve been very self-critical about the end of the campaign. But that’s it. Please, I ask the fans to celebrate this as much as possible.”

Lisci acknowledged supporters may have mixed emotions after the team’s late-season downturn but urged them to appreciate the achievement.

“I understand there are conflicting feelings right now, but the only thing I can say to the fans is: celebrate it,” he said. “Very strong teams have gone down, and we were fighting until the very last second. Until one matchday ago, we were competing with clubs from a completely different economic level, and two weeks ago we were still talking about Europe.”

“I understand that the way the season ended may have overshadowed what the league campaign was overall,” he added. “There are a lot of emotions after a match, and everything gets amplified. I understand that. But we have to look at the bigger picture. The most important thing is to celebrate, because after everything we’ve suffered, if we don’t celebrate now, we’re making a big mistake. Tomorrow we can talk about who’s to blame, but today, please, let everyone celebrate.”
